The whole idea of that program is to stimulate the auto industry by taking an old car off the road and have it replaced with a new fuel efficient vehicle. However the intent is not to give away money for a car that would go to the junk yard anyway. As a result the car to be scrapped has to be in operable condition. You can not strip it before turning it in.
To what extent can you break-up an old car under the gov’s scrappage scheme before the final exchange?
We have just bought a brand new Golf GTI Mk6 from a VW dealership under the scrappage scheme. We currently own, and hence are scrapping an L reg Rover sterling.
Under the scrappage scheme the car to be scrapped must “possess a current MoT certificate before the date of order for the brand-new vehicle (although a 14-day period of grace is negotiable).” This has been done and the Rover has a full MOT, tax disc etc.
The deal has already been done and the Golf is currently being built. We take delivery of it early September.
What I want to know is how much can we break-up the car from now until we deliver it to the dealer to be scapped? From what I have read so far, the legislation seems very muddy, and a lot seems down to dealer discretion. Obviously we will discuss it with them, but I would like to know our legal position and we don’t want to break the terms of the scrappage condition and lose out on our £2000 discount!
The Rover is still in great condition with only 88,000 miles and some of the parts are quite valuable. It seems silly to completely scrap a perfectly good car. We would like to break-up and sell off/give away the parts to Rover owners, doing our bit for the environment and making some pocket money at the same time!
Could we sell the engine? If not, what parts could we sell/give away? Could we literally strip the car down and tow an empty shell of a car into the VW dealership when we take ownership of the Golf without voiding the scrappage agreement?
We will obviously speak to the VW dealer about this but we would like to know our legal position. If anyone knows, or has done a similar thing, your help would be very very much appreciated.
